Stretcher bearers carrying the wounded are the focus here, and the Red Cross reference marks the scene as relief work rather than combat. The image is part of the National Photo Company Collection, a Washington, D.C. commercial photography firm whose glass negatives document much of the city's public life in the early twentieth century. This copy negative, a 1947 gift from Herbert A. French, is dated only to a span of about 1910 to 1935, and it shows streaks and blemishes from the gradual breakdown of the original coatings. It remains a useful record of how casualties were moved during that period.
