A swimming meet held under the Red Cross name at a Y.M.C.A. pool is the subject here, captured on an 8 by 6 inch glass negative. The National Photo Company, a commercial studio that documented Washington, D.C. and the surrounding region in the early twentieth century, made the picture, and its date falls between 1920 and 1921 based on neighboring negatives in the same run. Y.M.C.A. pools were common gathering places for swimming instruction and competition in that era, when water safety was a growing concern. The negative shows streaks and blemishes from the natural breakdown of its original coatings, which is worth noticing when studying the image.
