Its title names a funeral for Calvin Coolidge dated July 9, 1924, but the record notes that this identification comes from unverified data written by the National Photo Company on the negative or its sleeve. Coolidge had been president since 1923, when he succeeded Warren G. Harding, so any public funeral in that period would have drawn large crowds and press attention. The glass negative came to the Library of Congress as a gift from Herbert A. French in 1947, and its streaks and blemishes come from deterioration of the original coatings, which can affect fine detail.
