Grace Coolidge, wife of President Calvin Coolidge, stands with members of the women's fraternity Pi Beta Phi in this April 11, 1924 view, one of the many Washington-area portraits the National Photo Company recorded during the Coolidge years. The company's glass negatives document the social and official life of the capital in the 1910s and 1920s, when a First Lady's public appearances, including sorority gatherings, drew steady press attention. The surface streaks and blemishes on this plate come from the natural breakdown of its original coating, and they are worth noticing as part of the object's physical history.
