This picture is labeled "Mrs. Gov. Coolidge," which points to Grace Goodhue Coolidge, wife of Massachusetts Governor Calvin Coolidge, who took office in January 1919. The negative is dated to 1919 or 1920, a time when her husband's profile was rising after his firm stance during the Boston police strike in 1919. The National Photo Company, a Washington, D.C., studio that produced a large body of portraits and views in the early twentieth century, made the image on a glass plate. Streaks and other blemishes visible on the surface reflect natural deterioration of the original coating.
