Taken on August 6, 1923, this glass negative records Grace Coolidge only days after her husband, Calvin Coolidge, succeeded to the presidency upon Warren G. Harding's death on August 2. The National Photo Company, a Washington commercial studio known for its large body of portraits and views of the capital, is credited with the image, though the title is recorded as unverified. The glass shows faint streaks and blemishes from deterioration of its original coating, a common condition in plates of this age.
