Few pictures from the National Photo Company's Washington files capture a president and his household staff this informally. The glass negative shows Warren G. Harding and Mrs. Harding posing with George Christian, Harding's secretary, on June 20, 1923. That summer marked the final months of Harding's presidency, as he set out on a western trip and died in San Francisco in August. The faint streaks and blemishes on the plate come from the natural breakdown of its original coating, which is typical of glass negatives of this age.
