This photograph is distinctive for its pairing of a senator's wife with a woman identified only as Mrs. Eugene Drendome, shown alongside the Vice President as he takes part in the presidential electoral vote. The title in the record is based on unverified data supplied by the National Photo Company, so the spelling of the names and the exact role of each woman should be treated with caution. The picture dates to early 1921, shortly after the 19th Amendment took effect, which made 1920 the first presidential election in which women could vote nationwide. Images like this one, which show women in official ceremonial roles at the Capitol, were a way for the era's press to mark that change.
