Vice President Thomas R. Marshall, identified here by the abbreviated surname in the caption, took his oath on March 4, 1913, the same day Woodrow Wilson was sworn in as president. The inauguration drew large crowds to Washington, and the National Photo Company, a commercial studio that recorded the city's public life in the 1910s, produced views like this one for newspapers and the public. The glass negative shows streaks and blemishes from the deterioration of its original coating, which are worth keeping in mind when reading the image.
