Outgoing President William Howard Taft and president-elect Woodrow Wilson ride together in a carriage on the way to Wilson's 1913 inauguration, a rare moment of the two men side by side during a transfer of power. The National Photo Company, a Washington studio active in the early 1900s, made the glass negative, and its record notes streaks and other blemishes from deterioration in the original coatings. Those marks reflect the negative's age rather than the scene itself, and they are worth keeping in mind when viewing the image.
