Few presidents went on to a career as prominent as William Howard Taft's, which began with his term as the 27th president from 1909 to 1913 and continued when he became Chief Justice of the United States in 1921. This glass negative from the National Photo Company likely dates from the early 1920s, during his years on the Supreme Court. The studio recorded officials and public figures in Washington, and the streaks and blemishes on the plate come from deterioration of its original coating rather than from the portrait itself.
