Woodrow Wilson and William Howard Taft are named together in this 1913 view at the Capitol, the day Wilson was sworn in. Taft, the outgoing president, had lost the 1912 election after the Republican vote split, and his riding to the ceremony beside his successor was part of the courtesy customary on inauguration day. The image comes from the National Photo Company, a Washington studio that recorded the capital's public life on glass negatives, and the streaks and blemishes on the plate are the natural deterioration of its original coatings.
