Titled simply *John Henry*, this 1913 glass negative points to one of America's best-known folk heroes, the steel-driving man of ballad legend who was said to have outdone a steam drill. The title comes from the National Photo Company and is recorded as unverified, so the link to the legend should be read with that caution. The company's commercial studio work in the early twentieth century documented many aspects of American life, and this plate reflects the large-format glass negatives it used at the time. Streaks and other blemishes may appear on the plate, the result of natural deterioration in its original coatings.
