Henry N. Couden served as chaplain of the U.S. House of Representatives, a post whose holder has opened each day's session with prayer since the first Congress in 1789. This glass negative from the National Photo Company Collection is a portrait of him, and its title notes his office rather than a specific event. The company made many such studio and press portraits of Washington officials in the early twentieth century, so the image offers a record of how public figures were presented in that era. The collection was given to the Library of Congress by Herbert A. French in 1947. Faint streaks and blemishes are visible, which is typical of glass negatives of this age.
