The record names only Henry Z. Osborn of California, a title the National Photo Company wrote on the negative or its sleeve and that has not been independently verified, so little is known about the sitter or the setting. The glass plate is dated between 1918 and 1921 based on other negatives in the same range. The National Photo Company, based in Washington, D.C., made a large body of portraits and views in the early twentieth century, and this plate reached the Library of Congress as a 1947 gift from Herbert A. French. Expect streaks and other blemishes, which result from natural deterioration of the original coatings.
