Rather than a view of the battlefield, this glass negative records a copy of a painting: Col. John Trumbull's *Washington at Trenton*, dated 1792 in the catalog record. Trumbull had served as an aide to George Washington during the Revolution, and he later painted the American attack on Trenton, New Jersey, on December 26, 1776, when Washington's troops surprised the Hessian garrison there. The National Photo Company, a commercial firm active in the early twentieth century, made the negative sometime between about 1908 and 1919, and its glass shows the streaks and blemishes that come with aging coatings.
