Col. John T. Axton, the Army's Chief of Chaplains, sat for this portrait on November 2, 1921, a year when the chaplaincy was still defining its role within the service after the First World War. The picture was made by the National Photo Company, a Washington studio that documented officials, officers and public events in the early twentieth century, and its glass negative reached the Library of Congress as a 1947 gift from Herbert A. French. Viewers should notice the streaks and blemishes on the negative, which come from the natural breakdown of its original coating.
