A portrait of Mrs. John Gordon Battelle, dated May 20, 1922, is one of the individual sitters recorded in the National Photo Company Collection. The company worked largely in Washington, D.C., and its early twentieth-century pictures document the city's social life and public figures. Made on a glass negative no larger than 5 by 7 inches, the image came to the Library of Congress as a gift from Herbert A. French in 1947. Its record notes that streaks and other blemishes may appear from natural deterioration of the original coatings, a common condition in glass plates of this age.
