Two women who had just won seats in Congress stand at the center of this glass negative, dated December 4, 1924: Mary T. Norton, the New Jersey representative-elect, and Mrs. John J. Nolan of California, who had entered the House after her husband's death. Their photographs were made in Washington at a time when women held only a handful of seats in Congress, and the National Photo Company's studio recorded many such political visitors for newspaper use. The negative is a 5 x 7 inch glass plate, and it shows streaks and blemishes from the gradual breakdown of its original coating, which is typical of plates from this period.
