Mrs. William McMillian Adams is the subject here, photographed at Democratic headquarters on October 3, 1924, about a month before that year's presidential election. Women had been able to vote nationally since the Nineteenth Amendment took effect in 1920, and by 1924 both parties were courting female voters and staffing campaign offices with women. The picture comes from the National Photo Company, a Washington studio that documented politicians, officials and news events from the 1910s through the 1930s. Faint streaks and blemishes on the glass plate are signs of age in the original coating, not in the scene itself.
