The title names Charles H. and Mrs. Ellis and says something was "new" with them, but the record does not explain what, so the scene is best read from the picture itself. It is a glass negative dated April 12, 1924, made by the National Photo Company, a Washington, D.C., studio that documented the city and its residents in the early twentieth century. Glass plates were the standard medium of that period, and their coatings often deteriorate over time, so this one may show streaks or other blemishes. The plate came to the Library of Congress as a gift in 1947.
