Plaster casts of dinosaur eggs, rather than the fossils themselves, are the subject of this 1924 view of Charles W. Gilmore, a paleontologist at the Smithsonian's United States National Museum. Gilmore was known for his studies of dinosaur skeletons, and in the 1920s fossil eggs from Central Asia drew wide public interest after expeditions in the Gobi Desert reported finding them. The National Photo Company, a Washington studio that documented government work and public life in the capital, made the glass negative, which preserves how museum scientists displayed and studied these fragile finds. The title comes from the studio's own labeling, so the exact occasion is not recorded.
