The sleeve identifies the sitters as Mr. and Mrs. Charles A. Whipple and dates the exposure to November 21, 1924, though the library notes that this title is unverified. The picture survives as a glass plate negative, a format widely used by commercial studios and press photographers in the early twentieth century. The National Photo Company, which operated in Washington, D.C., from about 1907 to the 1930s, produced large numbers of such negatives, and the collection came to the Library of Congress as a gift in 1947. Viewers may notice streaks and blemishes, which the library attributes to deterioration of the original emulsion coatings.
