A glass negative dated February 5, 1929, identifies its subject as Mrs. John Allan Dougherty. The title comes from data the National Photo Company wrote on the negative or its sleeve, and the Library of Congress has not verified it. The company worked in Washington, D.C., and its files record much of the city's public and social life in the early twentieth century. Herbert A. French gave the negative to the Library in 1947, and its glass shows streaks and blemishes from the gradual breakdown of the original coatings.
