Representative John Philip Hill of Maryland and Mrs. Hill sit for this portrait dated March 23, 1925, during his years in the U.S. House of Representatives. The picture is a glass negative from the National Photo Company, a Washington, D.C., studio that recorded government officials, diplomats and other visitors to the capital in the 1910s and 1920s. Glass plates were the standard medium of the period, and this one shows streaks and blemishes from the natural breakdown of its original coating, so the image carries the wear of the negative as well as the moment it captured.
