Counsel for the Republican National Committee, Weymouth Kirkland was photographed on October 23, 1924, in the final weeks of that year's presidential campaign, when party lawyers were especially active. The National Photo Company, a Washington studio that documented officials and public figures in the capital during the 1910s and 1920s, made the image on a small glass negative. Parts of the original caption have rubbed away, and the surface shows streaks from the natural decay of its coating, which gives the plate a soft, faded look worth noticing.
