Finalists from across the country gathered for the National Spelling Bee, and this glass negative captures them as the June 1926 contest neared its close. The bee was sponsored by Scripps-Howard newspapers and held in Washington, D.C., drawing young spellers from many states. The image comes from the National Photo Company, a Washington studio that documented the city's officials, events and visitors in the early twentieth century. Streaks and mottling across the glass reflect deterioration in the original coatings, so some fine detail has softened over time.
