Three Socialist figures stand together in this December 1924 portrait: Representative Victor Berger, Bertha Hale White, and Eugene V. Debs. The record spells Berger's name "Beiger," but he is the Milwaukee Socialist who sat in Congress from 1923 to 1929, and the photograph dates to the same month Congress reconvened. Debs, the party's best-known leader, had been released from federal prison in 1921 and ran for president on the Socialist ticket in 1924. Photographs like this one, from the National Photo Company studio, helped the press and the public put faces to a movement that was active in Congress and on the campaign trail.
