Dated June 8, 1925, this glass negative is a formal portrait of Mrs. W.D. Mitchell, identified in its title as the wife of the Solicitor General. William D. Mitchell had been appointed to that federal post earlier in 1925, so the sitting reflects the social world around Washington officials of the period. The National Photo Company, a commercial studio active in the capital in the early twentieth century, made the image. The glass support shows streaks and blemishes from the natural breakdown of its original coating, which are worth noticing when comparing it with other prints from the same collection.
