This glass negative records William D. Mitchell, who was serving as Solicitor General of the United States when it was made on June 8, 1925, a post he held until 1929 before becoming Attorney General. The National Photo Company, a Washington, D.C., studio that photographed government officials and public events in the early twentieth century, produced the plate, and it reached the Library of Congress as a 1947 gift from Herbert A. French. Look for the streaks and blemishes the catalogers note, which come from deterioration of the original emulsion coatings on the glass.
