Colonel and Mrs. William Mitchell are the sitters named in this glass negative's title, which was supplied by the National Photo Company and has not been independently verified. The plate is dated to about 1925, based on other negatives in the same range. The studio worked in Washington, D.C., during the early decades of the twentieth century, photographing residents and visitors, and this plate came to the Library of Congress as a gift from Herbert A. French in 1947. Streaks and blemishes visible on the glass come from the gradual deterioration of the original coatings, a common condition for negatives of this age.
