The pairing here is what sets this picture apart: Mrs. Frank B. Kellogg, wife of the U.S. Secretary of State, photographed with Madam Titulescu, wife of the Romanian diplomat Nicolae Titulescu, on December 7, 1925. Diplomatic wives often accompanied their husbands to official functions in Washington, and portraits like this recorded the social side of international relations during the 1920s, a decade when the capital hosted many foreign legations. The image survives as a glass negative from the National Photo Company, a Washington studio whose large collection documents the city's public life. Faint streaks and blemishes on the glass come from the deterioration of its original coating, and they are worth noticing when judging the image's age and condition.
