Brig. Gen. William "Billy" Mitchell and his wife sit for this studio portrait, dated September 24, 1924, though the date comes from unverified records. Mitchell was then working in Washington, where he pressed hard for an independent air force and for stronger American air power, a campaign that led to his court-martial in 1925. The National Photo Company, a Washington studio that documented officials and public life in the early twentieth century, made the glass negative, and its original coating shows streaks and blemishes from age.
