Chief Justice William Howard Taft and Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes appear together at the funeral of Mrs. Joseph McKenna, wife of Justice Joseph McKenna, in October 1924. Two sitting members of the Supreme Court attending a colleague's family funeral gives the picture a personal weight beyond its news value. The photograph comes from the National Photo Company, a studio that documented public life in the nation's capital in the 1910s and 1920s. Faint streaks and blemishes on the glass negative reflect age in the original coating rather than changes to the scene.
