Dated October 29, 1923, this glass negative shows William Howard Taft, who was serving as Chief Justice of the United States at the time, a decade after leaving the White House. The National Photo Company, a Washington, D.C., studio that recorded public figures and events in the 1910s and 1920s, made the image, and its collection came to the Library of Congress as a gift in 1947. The record notes that the title comes from unverified company data, and the streaks and blemishes on the glass reflect natural deterioration of the original coatings.
