This glass negative is titled as a meeting between former President William Howard Taft and Sir George Adam Smith, the Scottish biblical scholar and university principal, with a second Adams Smith also named, though the record notes that these identifications come from unverified data supplied by the National Photo Company. The negative is dated April 17, 1924, when Taft was serving as Chief Justice of the United States, so the sitting places a former president and a leading European academic together in Washington. The National Photo Company produced large numbers of news and portrait negatives in the early twentieth century, and the streaks and blemishes visible on this plate are typical of aging glass coatings.
