Former President William Howard Taft, then Chief Justice, appears at the funeral of Justice Mahlon Pitney with his wife and fellow justices Joseph McKenna and Oliver Wendell Holmes Jr. Pitney had served on the Supreme Court from 1912 until he retired in 1922 for health reasons, and he died in early December 1924. The National Photo Company, a Washington studio that documented public life in the capital, made the glass negative, which shows the streaks and blemishes typical of aging coatings.
