Taken on February 22, 1922, this glass negative shows William Howard Taft, who had served as the 27th president before becoming Chief Justice of the United States in 1921. The National Photo Company, a Washington studio that documented officials and public life in the early twentieth century, made it, though the collection data notes that the title itself is unverified. Visitors should look for the streaks and blemishes across the glass, which the record attributes to natural deterioration of the original coatings. The negative came to the Library of Congress as a gift from Herbert A. French in 1947.
