Edgardo Simone appears beside a bust of Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes Jr. in this glass negative. Holmes served on the Supreme Court from 1902 until his retirement in 1932, which fits the picture's date range of roughly 1909 to 1932. The National Photo Company, a Washington studio that documented the city and its residents in the early twentieth century, made the image, though the title comes from information written on the negative and has not been independently verified. Streaks and blemishes across the glass come from the natural breakdown of its original coating, and they show the negative's age.
