Here a sculptor named Edgardo Simone is paired with a bust of General John J. Pershing, a title the National Photo Company wrote on the negative, though the record marks it as unverified. Pershing became a national figure as commander of the American Expeditionary Forces in France during World War I, and portrait busts of him were made and displayed widely in the years around and after 1918. The National Photo Company, a Washington, D.C., studio active through the early twentieth century, recorded the capital's people and events on glass plates like this one. The streaks and blemishes on the surface come from the natural deterioration of the original coating, so the haze is part of the negative's history.
