The title names General John J. Pershing, commander of the American Expeditionary Forces in France during World War I, which sets this parade apart from the company's many other views of the capital. The record's date range, 1909 to 1923, spans his rise to national prominence and the postwar years, including the Victory Parade he led down Pennsylvania Avenue in September 1919. The National Photo Company, a commercial firm that photographed Washington street life and public events in the early twentieth century, made the negative. Its glass plates often show streaks and coating loss from age, and this one may too.
