The Washington Monument in the District of Columbia is the subject here, a tall marble obelisk that had stood unfinished for decades before its completion in 1884 and became the city's most recognizable landmark. This glass negative comes from the National Photo Company, a Washington firm that photographed the capital and its surroundings in the early twentieth century, and it is dated only approximately, to a span between 1909 and 1923. Its emulsion shows streaks and blemishes from age, which is typical of glass plates from that era and is worth noticing when comparing it with later prints.
