The title "Peace Monument" points to the memorial near the U.S. Capitol, where the Peace Monument honors Union soldiers and sailors who died in the Civil War. The record's title comes from notes the National Photo Company wrote on the negative, which the Library of Congress has not independently verified, and the date is inferred from other negatives in the same range. The National Photo Company documented Washington streets, monuments and government buildings in the early twentieth century, so this image offers a view of the capital as it looked in those years. Faint streaks and blemishes on the glass reflect the natural decay of its original coating.
