The airship pictured is the ZR-1, the Navy's first rigid airship built in the United States, which the Navy later named USS Shenandoah. The place name in the title, a monument, comes from unverified data written on the negative or its sleeve, so the exact landmark should be treated with caution. The National Photo Company produced a large body of views of Washington and the surrounding region in the early twentieth century. Like many of its glass negatives, this one shows streaks and blemishes from the coatings breaking down over time.
