The regimental monument of the 44th New York stands on Little Round Top, the rocky hill at the southern end of the Gettysburg battlefield, where Union troops fought on July 2, 1863. The regiment was raised in 1861 as Ellsworth's Avengers, named for Col. Elmer Ellsworth, and it served in the Fifth Corps during the fighting for that ground. This glass negative dates from about 1920, when the National Photo Company was photographing American landmarks and battlefield sites for tourists. Faint streaks and blemishes in the glass come from the gradual deterioration of its original coating.
