Devil's Den is the jumble of granite boulders on the southern edge of the Gettysburg battlefield, where Confederate sharpshooters and Union defenders fought hand to hand on July 2, 1863. This glass negative, made by the National Photo Company around 1920, records the site decades after the battle, when the rocks had become a popular stop for visiting veterans and tourists touring the park. The negative's record notes streaks and blemishes from the deterioration of its original coating, which is typical of glass plates of this age and adds to the sense of the picture's long passage through time.
