What sets this negative apart is its title, "Bruce Lubomirski," which the National Photo Company wrote on the glass or its sleeve, though the Library of Congress notes that the name has not been verified. The plate is dated to about 1920, when the National Photo Company, a Washington, D.C., firm, was producing large numbers of portraits and views, and its glass negatives served as the working record of that output. Herbert A. French gave the negative to the Library in 1947. Look closely and you may see streaks and blemishes, the natural deterioration of the original coating on a century-old glass plate.
