The record identifies this glass negative only by the name "J.F. Stowell," a label the National Photo Company recorded on the negative or its sleeve, and the library notes that the attribution is unverified. The small plate, 4 by 5 inches or smaller, dates from about 1920, when the company was among the most prolific commercial photographers in Washington, D.C., documenting city life, public figures and ordinary residents. Herbert A. French gave the negative to the Library of Congress in 1947. Look for the streaks and blemishes the cataloguers describe, which come from the natural breakdown of the original emulsion coatings on glass plates of this age.
