Cannons and memorials dominate this view of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, a battlefield that by the late 1910s was crowded with commemorative stone and bronze. The Gettysburg National Military Park, established in 1895, had become a landscape of monuments raised by states and veterans' groups to mark where their units fought in the July 1863 battle. The National Photo Company, which produced many views of American places for tourists and publishers, recorded scenes like this in the years after the First World War. The glass negative shows streaks and blemishes from deterioration of its original coating, which is worth keeping in mind when judging fine detail.
