Rock Creek Park, the wooded valley that cuts through northwest Washington, D.C., is the setting for this glass negative, and its record points to a stone bridge and a footpath as the main features. The picture comes from the National Photo Company, a commercial studio that photographed Washington scenes for sale to visitors in the years around 1918 to 1920. Park land along Rock Creek was set aside in 1890 and was a popular place for walking and outings, so images like this one document how residents and tourists used the city's green spaces. The glass plate itself shows surface streaks from the aging of its coating, a reminder of the fragile materials these early photographers relied on.
